Into the Heat
Amara Diallo
A former refugee of civil conflict, Amara fled her hometown with little more than her grandmother’s cast-iron mortar and pestle and a notebook filled with family recipes. In Paris, while working grueling night shifts as a hotel cleaner, she cooked traditional West African peanut stew (mafé) and fried plantains for fellow displaced women in her apartment building. Her cooking transformed shared grief into collective healing and joy. She now runs a community supper club called The Hearth of Diaspora, proving that home is not a place, but the warmth of a shared meal.
